European Cheerleading Championships 2020 postponed
During the last few weeks, ECU has been in constant contact with the Italian Cheer Federation (FICEC) and International Cheer Union (ICU) and we have been monitoring the situation in Italy and in other European countries caused by the Corona virus (COVID-19) outbreak. Many sport and other events across the Europe are being cancelled or postponed and therefore we have also been looking into several options regarding the European Cheerleading Championships that was planned to be held on 3 – 5 July 2020 in Verona (Italy). In this regard we cannot emphasize enough that safety and health of our athletes, coaches, officials, delegates and all our friends and family members that attend this cheerleading event is our highest priority.
We have also taken into consideration that many European countries have prohibited sport practices and sport events which prevents athletes to train and adequately prepare for the European Cheerleading Championships and also prevents many National Federations to organize qualifying events. In additional to this we have also considered that planning of travel and accommodation requires certain time that might not be available to teams in current relatively unknown future.
Considering all above the ECU Board unanimously decided, with consent from FICEC, to postpone the European Cheerleading Championships 2020 by one year.
The Verona (Italy) European Cheerleading Championships will be held in the year 2021. We are currently working on securing a new date and will inform everybody as soon as we have more information on that. The Board has also decided (with consent from Greek Cheer Federation) that Athens (Greece) European Cheerleading Championships will be held in the year 2022 and that ongoing bid process for the organization of the European Cheerleading Championships 2022 is cancelled. We will publish a new call for bids for the year 2023.
We are also working on several options to ensure that ECU General Assembly 2020 will be held according to the ECU Statutes and we will communicate more information about this year’s assembly in accordance with our statutes.
We thank you all for your understanding and patience in these difficult times. We are sure that our cooperation and care for our sport and Athletes will allow us to overcome this current setback and will makes us stronger for future challenges.
